So, picture this—I stumbled upon this rock in a pile of road fill and nearly tossed it aside. But oh, what a turnaround! Turns out, it’s a fluorescent wonder waiting to be discovered. Now, it’s time to play detective and find out where this gem originated.

The Exciting Hunt Begins

On top of the plateau where I found the rock, there are a few outcrops. But a couple of miles away, the plateau spills its secrets. That’s where my journey begins.

This mystery rock is no softie; it’s hard and built to resist erosion, probably nestled in some ledges. At least, that’s my hope—who wants to descend 500 feet to the plateau’s base, right? So, I’ll start at the summit, explore the outcrops, and then gracefully navigate down the slope to the gentle hills below.

These slopes are no walk in the park—they’re hard, slippery, and steeper than they seem in these pics. It’s all about scouting the path before descending and taking it slow. A slip here is no joke; a tumble can be downright dangerous.

No luck finding the mystery rock in the ledges. Down the slippery slope I go, possibly climbing back up with a backpack full of rocks. Yep, just your average, crazy geologist!

Even in these rugged badlands, during an extended, brutal drought, nature paints the landscape with vibrant colors. It’s a pleasant distraction from the dull formations, and the occasional shy bumblebee adds a sweet touch. This adventure is more than just rocks; it’s a springtime renewal of life and energy after a long winter.

With a bit of sleuthing, success! Not as jaw-dropping as that opal wonderland, but hey, it’s still a cherished fluorescent spot.

Three small, weathered outcrops with minimal exposure. Not much chance of snagging fresh specimens from a vertical face, but loose, weathered rocks are abundant—easy pickings.

In the daylight, I grabbed a few specimens resembling the most fluorescent ones, but that’s always a hit-or-miss guess. Fluorescence tells the real story, so a return trip at night is a must.
